DVD drive not working

Yesterday i changed my Asus 5224A CDRW drive and my Liteon 16x DVD drive to an Asus 5232A CDRW Drive and an Asus 16x DVD Drive, the old ones went into a different computer. The new Asus CDRW drive works fine, the DVD drive does not, it's fine reading CDs, but when i try and watch dvds powerdvd stops responding or i get stuttering sound and no picture from wmp10. I've tried the drive in a different computer and it works fine. The new drive was working yesterday but is not now, i have tried every ide channel configuration, it worked when i changed both drives to the other channels, but only once, after which it went back to the way it was . I've updated it to the latest firmware version. Any suggestions, it's really beginning to annoy me. I also bought a Hitachi 7K250 (SATA) to replace my 180GXP(PATA), don't know whether that could be causing the problem or not.

Perhaps a bad cable (most cables today are made so cheaply it's a wonder they work at all!) or jumper settings need to be changed..

Check your BIOS settings, since you put in another SATA drive, it may have disabled one of your IDE channels. Also did you have DMA enabled? You could also try disabling hardware acceleration in power dvd to see if that gets rid of the stuttering.

it works fine with everything (including dvd roms) except DVDs, which is making me think it's something to do with copy protected discs, any ideas?

Updating the ASPI layer software (download from adaptec.com) often resolves weird optical drive problems. Anyone who reads this and has never updated their ASPI layer - go do it now!

Updated the ASPI layer, now i can watch DVDs, thankyou zepper, i really didn't think this problem was going to be solved. Just goes to show how useful the anandtech forums are.

YW. Now maybe you can solve a little problem for me. Just make the sun shine a little more often on central NY in the winter... 😉

:moon:

first of all i'll get it to shine on South East England, then maybe i'll try central NY but i'm not making any promises
