dvd drive not recognized after clean xp install

I just upgraded to the following parts:
mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P P45 775 R
cpu: e5200
heatsink: stock that comes with e5200
videocard: palit hd3870 512mb
powersupply: antec earthwatts 500w
ram: ocz reaper 2 gigs(i checked to make sure this was supported by mobo and it is)

did a clean install of windows XP home, however the DVD drive is not functioning in windows. what is strange is that i was able to boot from the windows install cd to complete the installation using the dvd drive, but once i get to the desktop, the dvd drive does not work and instead appears as "removable disk(d: )" in my computer. it gives me some I/O error if i try to open it.

this is a problem because the driver disk that came with the mobo is a DVD...if i cant use the dvd drive, i cant install the network card drivers or any other drivers(and since i cant install the network drivers, i cant get online to get any other drivers). if i try to put the DVD into my cd-rw, and then click "explore" for that drive, it just shows up as empty. however, if i boot from the mobo DVD, then it does work and it takes me to some kind of recovery program that i guess i can use to create a backup image. so, it seems like neither the DVD, cd-rw drive or the dvd drive is defective.

the cd/rw and dvd drives are just cheap off brand stuff, but they worked absolutely perfectly prior to me doing this upgrade last night. i am not sure if they are ide or scsci, but i can tell you that the cable goes from one drive into the other where the same cable then splits and goes into the motherboard(i am pretty sure the motherboard says ide where i plug it in). i have a power cable plugged into both drives and they open and function properly. as for bios, i have not touched anything and just let everything boot set to auto. i have a feeling this has something to do with master/slave settings, but i have no clue what any of that really means.

does anyone know what the heck is going on? thanks.

That'll be IDE - your board does not support SCSI. Did you get the master/slave settings right? Are your hard drives SATA? Do they work ok?

i dont know if i got the master/slave settings right because a) i dont know what that really means, and b)i dont know how to change the settings. i tried plugging the ribbon cable into the drives in different order, and i tried unplugged the cd/rw drive all together so the dvd drive was the only one plugged in, but nothing worked.

yes, the harddrive is sata(i only have 1). i assume it works without a problem because i can boot into windows just fine.

I have been through this, and the Registry edit to delete upper and lower filters resolved the problem. It is not uncommon with an XP upgrade or change.

314060

This is the manual edit procedure:

Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor.

Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.

If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."

On the Edit menu, click Delete.

Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed.
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.

Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.

If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.

Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.
