DVD Drive keeps popping open

Does anyone know why a DVD drive would spontaneously open on boot up? I close it and it doens't recognize the CD, ejects it, close, eject, close, eject, until it finally recognizes the autoplay. It plays fine once it recognizes the CD, though. Is the drive going bad, or perhaps new drivers are required? It's a generic drive, I'm not sure of the mannufacturer. Device manager recognizes it as an "AVX CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device" - although it is not SCSI, it is IDE.

woops, that SCSI was my Alcohol virtual drive. My DVD drive is recognized as: MT1316 BDV212B

I have the exact same problem, with the exact same model DVD drive! MT1316B BDC212B

it is driving me crazy, in and out in and out, and it is hardly ever reading the CD anymore.
the autoplay almost never kicks in. plus it sits there reading for about 10 seconds before
it finally decides to eject again.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I had a similar problem with my Liteon LTD-163 ever since I changed to my nforce2 board. It would automatically open the tray (at bootup and then at random times) and it would read very slow in an older install of win98)

Disabling DMA solved both the slowness and the ejection in that copy of win98 (it worked fine in a clean copy), of course it did have the disadvantage of high cpu usage because of this.

A new install of win98 worked just fine speed wise but the ejection issue was still around, I found that disabling auto insert notification totally solved my problem.
