NDC DVD_RW ND-3550@ is the drive i have. I installed it in a HP pc that is running windows xp. I don't know why but windows recognizes the drive but it won't work at all. A window pops up and says to install hardware so I click yes, Then it doesn't work. It says windows cannot recognize the drive again.

I went into windows media player and tried to burn a music cd, WMP didn't even recognize the drive was installed. I have the the IDE and molex connector plugged in. I just cannot get this drive to work.

From what I think windows xp should have to install drivers right? I thought it would just recognize the drive. If someone can please help out I would greatly appreciate it thanks.

Have to ask but what is it jumpered to...? S,M,C...? Also do you have your IDE enabled in the bios...? (If running SATA also)...?

I went into the bios and it shows the dvd drive that I installed but it doesnt show the other cd drive that is already installed. Do you think there could be a problem with the ide cable itself?

As bart asked, check the jumper, is it in the right position? Are you using a cable that runs two drives or a single? If a single also try swapping ends on the cable, I've had IDE drives work one way and not the other.

I disconnected the old dvd drive and installed the new dvd rw drive. It has two drives on the one ide cable. I'm gonna take this thing apart again and try to run the cable with only one drive and see what happens

You'll need to make the drive that is the end of the cable the Master (put the jumper in the M position) and the drive in the middle of the cable the Slave (put the jumper in the S position).

It's not yet quite clear, but it appears you have two optical drives sharing one IDE cable - one older CD, plus the new DVD. So here are the rules for setup:
1. The data cable MUST have 80 wires in it, even though it has 40 (well, 39 really) pins on the connector. Count across it. If you get to 20 and you're still only ¼ of the way across, you're OK.
2. The BLUE connector goes to the mobo IDE port. The BLACK connector at the other end goes to the device jumpered as Master (below). The GRAY connector in the middle goes to the Slave IF you have one (you do in this case).
3. There MUST be one device with jumpers set to Master - see the diagram on the drive case. The second device MUST be set to Slave. EXCEPTION: you can set BOTH devices to "CS" (for Cable Select) and then the one on the Black END connector WILL be the Master.
4. IF you still have a problem, consider putting ONE optical device on the cable with your IDE HDD, and leaving one as the only device on the second IDE port. In this configuration, make the HDD the Master and the optical that shares a cable with it the Slave. On the other channel, the ONLY device (optical drive) on the port MUST be the Master.

Have you checked the HP instructions? Sometimes they say you must run some software utility from an included CD BEFORE connecting the new piece of hardware, just so the correct driver can be placed in the right place for Windows to find it when it detects the new item. Other times you install afterward.

I would expect a driver to be provided. In fact, may people are in the habit of NOT installing the driver that comes with a new device; instead, they insist on going to the maker's website and downloading / installing the latest driver.
