DVD drive does not play entire dvd movies!

My dvd drive does not play dvd movies to the end. It reaches a certain point in the movie and goes no further. This happens to all the movies I play (4 so far). Is this a sign that the drive is defective?
Thanks.:disgust:

it's very possible - but there's a chance it could be the DVDs... some import DVDs will do that and u have to go to the next chapter or whatever...

Have you tested a VCD?
Are you using a software decoder? (Have you tried a different one)
Is your Case temp high? (Is the drive and/or disc noticably hot/warm when the problems come up?).
Do you have DMA enabled?
Do they all quit at roughly the same time (point through the movie, ie: 45mins or something)?
Have you run a benchmark or any other test on it? (To see if they fail)
Do you have problems with Audio CDs in the drive?

Thanks for you valuable input!
How do I run a VCD test?
I'm using a software decoder than came with my ATI card. Do you know where I can download another (possibly better) one? DMA is enabled. The picture quality is excellent. I don't have problems with audio cds. I will have to time the point of failure. I will also double check the temp of the case/drive.
Thanks again!

Yes, make sure you're not using a time limited trial version. I had a similar problem, wondered why the sound would quit after 5 minutes when playing in Power DVD...turns out the trial is time limited, so I found a different player 😀

I once had the same problem on a dvd i once installed,it would play the intro for about 8 seconds then it quit.

As it turns out all i had to do was update the aspi layer files & after that i played like a charm.🙂

"How do I run a VCD test?"

Well if you have a Video CD in your collection somewhere (most people don't). Just slap it in the drive and play it.

Look here for DVD software.
