This problem has been going on for sometime now but is getting worse. The dvd drive is disappearing from my computer. After booting it is there but once I try to put a dvd in the drive it disappears. I used to be able to do a system restore a few days back but that no longer works. It is visible in my BIOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering - firstly, are the cables at the back of the drive pushed in far enough?

Also, are you using any USB devices at the same time?
And, what OS?

I've checked the cables and jumper. USB devices are keyboard, mouse, printer and card reader. I am using a usb hub also. OS is XP pro. Thanks.

Well, I've unplugged the card reader and its not disappearing now but something is still wrong. Some dvds are readable but it takes longer than normal to open the contents. Other dvds are not readable. The drive changes to a cd drive and shows that there is nothing on the disc. Does this sound like the drive is bad?

These dvds that you are trying -

Are they retail ones with movies on, or are they your own blanks?

The reason I ask is that some DVDRW are fussy about DVD+RW discs or DVD-RW discs.

They are blanks and also are a new brand I just bought too. They were working fine before though. I'll have to try some retail ones when I get home from work and see what happens. Thanks.

Also, if you have a mate with a pc, ask him if you can plug your dvd into his computer - just do the cables and check the jumper is set right - don't worry about screwing it into the case.
See if you still get the same problem.

If the dvd player is shot, you can get really fast, quiet ones for very cheap. I recommend the Optiarc x18.
