dvd disk won't play

I just bought a new dvd movie. It would not play in my dvd drive. Actually the drive doesn't even recognize that anything is loaded. I tried it on the DVD player hooked into my TV and it was fine. Thinking I just might have a faulty disk I exchanged it. Same title, same thing happened.

I have watched many dvd's on my computer system and this has never happened. The store told me I needed to clean my laser. While this may be true it was also a sales pitch. I'll clean it some other time. Anyway, what could be happening here? Why would one movie "title" not be gettting read by my machine. If I throw it into my cd rom drive it doesn't recognize that anything is in the drive either. Anyone have any ideas?

What happens when you launch your DVD software? Does it not recognize that there's a DVD in the drive, or does it play normally? If it plays normally, then it's just that for some reason your OS is no longer auto-running the DVD disc when it's inserted into to DVD drive. If it still doesn't recognize it after you launch your DVD software and press play, then either the DVD or the DVD drive needs cleaning.

To clean your DVD, just get some canned air, open the tray, and spray in there to dislodge any dust bunnies. You may also want to do a Google search to make sure it's not your DVD movie or specific DVD drive which is the problem; for example I have a Pioneer DVD drive and the LotR: EE works fine for me, but some people with certain Samsung and LG DVD drives are having problems with the Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition DVD.
