I am going to get a DVD/CDROM unit instead of just a CDROM
for a PC i am building based on an ABIT KT&RAID/AMD 1.0.
I expect to pay <150 for a decent unit...it doen't have to
be the best, but i don't want to find that it's not good
enough....i don't know DVDs well...

I am focusing on the Pioneer 16x/40x DVD Slot Loading below***

Any reason to go tray loading instead of slot loading?

Pioneer is decent DVD right?

is it worth saving the ~25 bux for a 'slower drive' or other
name brand?

here are my choices in best to worse order:

Toshiba has once again shown their technological prowess with the SD-M1402. Quite simply, their is not a more reliable high performance drive than this one. With a 12X DVD playback and 40X on CDs, this drive sports a fast 90ms DVD access time and an 80ms CD read time. Compatible with all types of media, it includes a 128kb buffer and an Ultra DMA interface. (HH drive; requires either hardware or software DVD decoding interface). Go with the Toshiba.

It's every bit as good as the Pioneer, it's also quieter and I've seen quite a few reports of complaints on the Pioneer lately.

My pioneer is starting to go and it's just over a year old...
Do a search in the hardware forum for keyword "panasonic" and look at my thread about the Panasonic 8x DVD...there are 4 or 5 users in there complaining of dead or dieing Pioneer drives...and I've heard more else where.

The pioneer was very good while it lasted...but it's dissapointing me lately...

If you have a cdrw in your system, can't beat the clonecd and overall read compatibility of toshiba drives

A Panasonic 8XDVD can be had for $80 CDN, ~$52 American....

i wouldn't get anything else, unless u desparately want a slot load. (which defnitely look cooler, are slightly quicker to load/unload)

speed is not a big deal...my 5X has 100% smooth playback, even when fastforwarding 4X...at 8X fast forward, it starts to get choppy...but who cares..u can seek by time, chapter, etc...fastforwarding at 8X is useless.

Yeah my Pioneer 6x is almost dead now. It pretty much wont read anything :( Im gonna get a toshiba dvd drive. Where is the best place to get one? Im looking to spend around $100. Im looking at the Toshiba 12x for $89 at directron. Should I go for that or is there a better one I should get?
