DVD crappy sound

for some reason when I try to play a DVD the sound is super crackaly. The video is fine, but the audio is bad. I dont have this problem with VCDs. I have tried Windvd and Powerdvd, its the same on both. I have even tried different sound drivers. For some reason windows says it will only do PIO mode, could this be my problem? I know it has worked before, but I dont play dvds often so I dont know when the problem first poped up.

not sure if the drive being in pio mode is the problem but you can try to get it to use dma by uninstalling the ide controller the drive is on then rebooting. windows will redetect the controller & reinstall it hopefully allowing the drive to use dma instead of pio!

How do you output the sound? Via digital out or analog out? Are you playing DD/DTS tracks or downmixing to DPL/stereo?
