dvd copies audio too low

When I make a direct copy of a dvd, i.e. no compression, it sounds fine -- but if done with compression so it will fit, the audio sounds way too low. From what I understand the audio does not get compressed, only the video ?

Anyhow, I'm using the following to accomplish this:

dvdshrink 3.1
dvddecrypter 3.2.2
imgtool classic 0.91.2 (because of fat32 partition, 4gb limit)

There are no errors on the burned dvd's. The same audio deficiency can be heard on 2 standalone dvd players. If I change any of the audio settings on the player, the results are the same.

What gives?
