DVD commentary, Lame?

I like them myself, then again I'm a huge movie junkie. Some commentaries are better than others. Ridley Scott does some of the best. His commentaries on Gladiator and Alien were fantastic, lots of behind the scenes goodies and stuff on the actors and locations. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter are hilarious on The Thing. The Babylon 5 commentaries are good, especially the cast ones. Any Kevin Smith movie has great stuff. The Rock: Criterion Collection was quite interesting. Really neat to hear what the actors thought of working together and some of the background research that went into it. Of course there are stinkers. Matrix is bad, way too many periods of dead air when they're at a loss for what to say. T2 wasn't that good. I didn't really care for Soderberg did on Ocean's 11. Too freaking dull.

Really, the worst ones are categorized by extended periods of dead air where the commentator is saying nothing and just watching the flick. The best ones for me are usually 2-3 people who can play off each other in their reminiscences of the movie. Solo commentary definitely the hardest to do. I wish that the studios making them would insist that the people see the movie beforehand and like have some notes handy.

The Jackass movie is the only one I listened to.

That could actually be fun.
Is it true the Jackass movie has 5 hours of extras?

I didn't get a chance to check the extras out yet - that's a lot of extras if it's true!

I watched the season 2 dvd with the commentary, and it was quite entertaining. You learn a lot about the members of the cast.

have never listened to one, and dont really have the desire to. then again, i hate 99.9% of movies, so i may be a little biased.

That is the best one. Those three had great chemistry between them alright! Season 3 is okay, though they got like 5 of them together so they tend to talk over each other a lot. I hope they cut it back to 3 or less for season 4. (Only a month for that, sweet!)

Keira knightley commentary on pirates dvd is hilarious. Jeunets commentary on amelie is great too (its like he hates his movie), commentary on requiem for a dream by the cinematographer is awesome too (that tracking shot of burstyn doing chores throughout the day was amazing.) Winged migrations commentary great (especially when they talk about how they got the shots).. lots of great stuff.. but lots of really really really crappy stuff too. Its like 90/10.

While having quite a few periods of silence, the commentary on "Vanilla Sky" I thought led to so much more intriguing thought. Of course, I would rate Vanilla Sky in my top 10 movies, while I know many people hate it. So if its your thing, check out its commentary, IMO it's well worth it.

Side note: after watching Vanilla Sky one Saturday morning, I spent the rest of the day watching it again with the commentary, and then all the extra features, and then again normally. To me, it was THAT good.

This Is Spinal Tap has perhaps the best commentary.
b/c the cast criticizes their own work in character.

Simpsons/Futurama commentary is usually quite amusing, but some of the jokes/insights are repeated.

just read a review that comments on the quality of the commentary before bothering, many are cr@p but some aren't. use windvd and playback at 2x with normalized pitch🙂

I don't like them. Hearing about stuff happening on the set and whatnot ruins the magic of the film.

I did listen to the commentary on "The Great Escape". It confirmed what I thought: Steve McQueen is a full of himself jackass crybaby that all of the other crew hated.

Commentary for fear & loathing(criterian), fight club & vanilla sky are great as movies go. all the new greatest hits/music video collections out now have decent commentary for the most part. i particualrly liked the primus commentary because it was done in a group. the chili peppers was so-so, but better for the videos you haven't seen too often.

Give Clare Danes a break, that was actually her first commentary.... and NO they are useful. They gave tidbits about behind the scenes stuff which I thought was cool...

Quit being a retard!

The commentary on Big Trouble in Little China is one of my favorites.

They spend half of the time making fun of the Jack Burton character.
