Hi all
Have bought a sony crx830e dvd/cdrw combi drive that fits into my laptop(toshiba 1800-400) witch previously
had a dvd drive that worked fine.
After fitting the cdrw drive i get an ide#1 error message when i boot up.this goes away when i reinstall my original
drive.
What is the problem and how can i fix this problem ?
Thanks in advance

IIRC Toshiba laptops expect to have their CD drives in 'Master' mode. While (nearly?) every other laptop expects it to be in 'Cable Select? (I might have the settings backwards)

Typically the drives are configured right from the factory and don't have jumpers for you to adjust the setting. For some drives you may be able to find firmware that will change the setting. Otherwise, I know that for some drives you may have to solder/de-solder some pins to change the setting.

You hit it on the nail. All 15V Toshiba's (very few exceptions) expect the drive to be Master/Slave (M/S). The easiest, maybe, way to get it to work is to flash the drive. You will have to find the M/S firmware and then put the drive into a computer that can recognize it to flash it. The other way is to solder pins 47 and 49 together, if I remember correctly, or the corresponding connection on the sytem board (not recommended). Or you can sell the drive and get a M/S and same some hassle.
