I would go for the Samsung 32x CDR/10x CDRW/40x Read/12x DVD at Newegg for $82. It's the fastest burning CDRW/DVD combo that I have seen (the other Toshiba and Plex combo drives burn at 16x or 20x).

I hope that you are meaning to say CDRW, because dvdrom can read cdroms without any real issue. if i am wrong about your meaning, then just get a LiteOn.

go for the samsung sm-348, it's the newest model running at 48x24x48-16x dvd-rom. There's a review for this drive at cdrlabs The only true negative was no support for mt.rainier but it has been officially stated by samsung on dec 31 2002 that mt.rainier support will be added with a firmware upgrade in mid jan 2003.
