I am building a new system and I am wondering if a DVD/CD-RW combo is a reliable choice, or if i should just get a DVD drive and a CD-RW drive separatley?
Unless it's allot cheaper, or you're trying to save IDE spots, I wouldn't get one. With two seperate drives you can do a direct copy. Plus there's less wear on two drives than there is on one, so they'll last longer.
Direct copy is always a plus. I have heard great things about the richo CDRW/DVD drive. I am not sure what they go for but you can get that and a cheap cd-rom.
I just installed my Ricoh 12x/10x/32x/8x combo unit. I picked it up from Buy.com for $280 after the pricematch with Onvia (was $230 and in stock when I ordered, but oh well). I use a $30 off coupon + a DOTD on the same order, so I didn't get shafted too bad. Thus far, I have only done two identical burns on a CompUSA 80min 4x CDRW ... one in Win2K with Prassi and one in WinME with Nero ... each while surf the boards and whatnot (testing JustLink ... can't tell if it ever kicked in, but burns didn't fail ).
I'm impressed. My now-removed Memorex 2x/2x/6x burner no longer liked Win2K so I could only burn in WinME. I want to do a few more burns before I tell everyone to go out and get one.
