DVD/CD Burner

Hi all

as of now i have a Plextor 708A which pretty much burns perfectly and i love it. I plan on building a new pc this summer and Im wondering if by then there will be any newer/better drives available.

I dont think that i need dual layer because i have no use for it.

I guess what I am asking is if I should replace my current burner for my new pc or just keep using this one?

How old is your 708A (how much use has it seen)?

Most new ones are dual layer. In the Plextor line there is the 740 & the 716. Some news regarding newer ones in Europe but not in US yet.

ive had it since the summer of 04 so like 2 years or little less

i do use it, i burn DVDs quite a bit

You're not going to be able to save any dough by targetting a single-layer burner, assuming you could even find one these days (you probably can't). You'll just have to live with a dual-layer burner in your system when you upgrade whether you like it or not! 😉

Also realize that dual-layer media has dropped considerably in price and will only get cheaper with time... whether you use it or not, there is no harm in having a dual-layer burner.

The Plextor 708 is an 8x single-layer DVD burner... the question on needing to upgrade really depends on whether or not you get impatient waiting for an 8x-burner to do it's thing.

Currently 16x DVD burners are the norm... though Plextor is just about ready to release an 18x DVD burner very shortly. Bottom line the decision on if you need to upgrade or not totally depends on if you think your current burner is too slow, and nothing else.

with the speed at which PC tech moves, why would you even ask now about something that may exist way off in Summer 2006 (June??)
by then you will be buying blue-ray DVD drives and holographic HDD.
