DVD/CD Burner on older computer?

Okay, my second computer is a Thunderbird, mobo is KT7-RAID, OS is Win2k. I have a Plextor CD Burner on it along with a regular DVD/CD-ROM drive. I also had a travan tape drive for backups, but the tape went today and I can't find a replacement.

I want to replace the Plextor CD Burner with a DVD/CD -+ Burner, but I'm not sure if this rig can handle the high-speed burners. I really don't want to be bothered with a bunch of backup CD's when it would take just one DVD.

Can I run a DVD/CD burner on the TBird rig? Does it make a difference if it's dual-layer? Also, for the other rig, I had bought DVD+R discs, but I read somewhere that it's better to get DVD-R discs - true or not? I have Nero on the TBird rig.

Go for it. Any decent drive will support both DVD+ and -R. Dual Layer is a joke. If a drive does it, fine, but please don't spend extra on it. DL's replacements are almost hitting the shelves: BluRay and HD-DVD. I wouldn't bother with these for years anyway.

New optical drives are still the slowest part of a computer (no 56k slowdem, right?) Nero, together with the drive, will protect against Buffer Underrun Errors. Just make sure DMA is enabled.

For serious backup needs, I suggest the pricey Plextor

Yeah, not to mention dual layer disks are $5 each when you find them on the cheap.

I would bet that computer can handle it just fine. My centrino laptop 1.4 can burn a DVD at 8x. It's a crappy comparison, I know, but it's still something..

Since DL disks aren't even 8x yet, they don't even use as much bandwidth as a single layer disk burning at 8x or dare I say 16x...
