dvd burning with plextor 716a

im getting really crappy speeds on it. the media itself should burn at about 8x.
from what i read, the drive can burn a bit faster but im not looking for more performance than the media claims.
however, running nero speed test, i find that it begins at 6x get to about 7.5 drops down to three and then flatlines below 6x for the duration of the burn.
which makes the burn time for a single-layer dvd a little less than an hour.

ive updated the firmware and nero. is it possible that the media just blows so bad to do this?

Check to see if DMA is enabled for the drive/drive channel. At 4x-6x your burns should be taking 15 min or less.

you know, as soon as i posted i thought "and my other hard drive is slow as hell too"
sure enough, they were both set to PIO for some reason.

anyone know why this happens?
i make backup images of almost everything i buy and just mount those to install and run. once im "done" with a game, i burn the backup to dvd. could the constant enabling and disabling of emulated drives have caused this?
