DVD Burning Sony 530A/Roxio Easy Media 7.0

I am using a Sony DVD DRU530A burner combined with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0.

I am able to all types onto CD-R discs with no problems, however when I tried burning a DVD
the burns failed with failure messages.
I was using a DVD-R disc when the failures occured.
I tried using a DVD+R and the burn was successful.

My question is: Why would the DVD-R disc fail? The Sony DRU530A is compatible with all types
of media, so it has to be a Software issue right?
I emailed Roxio tech support on this, but that might take a while.
Does anyone know if the Roxio Media program does NOT support DVD-R media and why?

Is my only option using DVD+R?
