DVD Burning software for Windows using HD mp4 files

Here's my situation. I want to find a DVD Burning software package (Free or Paid) that can do what I need, and do it well. I have tried a whole bunch of them, and so far none have really worked well. I bought Leawo DVD Creator. It had most of the features I wanted, but when I burned a DVD, the audio was way out of sync, and the picture looked like crap.

So here's what I need:

I am starting with 1080p HD video in mp4 format. I'm not sure how to deal with the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders in Nero, so I haven't used that, even though I have it. So the software must be able to convert the videos I have into whatever the DVD needs to work in a standard DVD player.

I need to be able to create a customized menu. My DVDs will have 10 to 15 short videos on them. I need to be able to select which video I want from a menu and when it's done, go back to the menu. Another option would be to play all videos in the order they are in on the DVD. I want the menu to be customizable, so that I can choose the music that plays from my own wav files and choose the image in the background, the text, etc.

I need it not to look like crap when played back full screen. My videos are razor sharp when I start. A 4 minute video at about 1.5 gig. I know that standard DVDs play back at 720X480 or some ridiculously low resolution like that, but when I buy or rent a DVD of a current movie, it doesn't look like crap. It looks like HD full screen, and I'm not talking Blu-Ray. How do they make commercial DVDs that look so sharp and yet play in standard DVD players when everything I burn regardless of how good and high quality the source file is looks like crap full screen. What are they doing that the average consumer can't do? This is an example of one of my files: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUV7aXPckzU
It's on YouTube, so even watching it in HD is compressed and not as sharp as the original file I have and would be burning to a DVD.

I just got Wondershare DVD Creator. It has the menu options I need. Pretty customizable. I will have to purchase a better template than what it comes with, but I can live with that.

The output is OK, but still looks like crap compared to the source. The problem is, at least when I try to play it in my computer, I can't click any of the menu buttons! They show up, but nothing works. I can't click Return to start it, The arrow keys don't move anything and the mouse can't click on anything. The only way I can get it to play anything is to go down to the play controls at the bottom that show up when you mouse-over, and click the next chapter button, which starts it playing from the beginning straight through. I haven't tried it on a regular DVD player yet, because I don't have one. I watch all my DVDs on my computer. I have a good sized screen and got rid of my TV.

I have ImgBurn, but can't find any way to create a menu or work with my mp4 files.

So what's a good rock-solid, not resource hogging, DVD burning software that does what I need, doesn't look like crap and the audio stays in sync with the video?

Please share your experiences with what you use and I am open to your suggestions.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Sounds like you are confusing the DVD format and DVD standards with the actual physical DVD. It also sounds like you are confusing DVD burning with DVD authoring. It also sounds like you don't have simple understanding of codecs and containers. If you want HD with menus, etc. now you are talking about BR creation.

You should probably spend some time with Google, or a few websites like VideoHelp or Doom9. They will be in much better positions to address your issues. Better yet, if you can find some community education courses for DVD creation......

I have HD content in mp4 format. I want them on a standard (Not Blu-Ray) DVD that will play in a Standard DVD player.

I want a program that can accept the files I have and convert them to whatever a Standard DVD needs.

I want to be able to create menus.

I want the quality of the playback to be as good as standard (not Blu-Ray) DVD movies I rent, or at least something reasonably close to the quality I am starting with.

Why is that not possible?

Thank you! That's what I was looking for. Someone with a suggestion for software that might do what I need with what I have. All I wanted was for someone to tell me what works for them. I am going to give ConvertXtoDVD a try.

I'll report back with results.

Thanks again

:awe:

Finally!!!!

Just so you know what I was dealing with, first, here are the specs for my computer:

Intel Core i7 Processor i7-3930K 3.2GHz 12MB SIX CORE
ASUS P9X79 PRO LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Intel MB with USB BIOS
64GB (8 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1333MHz (PC3 10600) Quad Channel
(8X) MEMORY HEAT SPREADERS
CORSAIR 256GB Solid State Drive SATA III (READ/WRITE 515MB/440MB)
WD 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB CACHE SATA 6.0Gb/s
24X DUAL LAYER DVD-RW W/LIGHTSCRIBE
nVidia GeForce GTX570 1280MB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI PCI-Express VC
REALTEK 8-CHANNEL DIGITAL SOUND ONBOARD
REALTEK 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Card (onboard)
CORSAIR 600 WATT HIGH PERFORMANCE PSU
INTERNAL ALL IN ONE DIGITAL CARD READER/WRITER
MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL 64-BIT

Just in case anyone thought my computer was underpowered of lacking in RAM.

Before trying the software that Conscript suggested, I had tried Nero Burning ROM 11, Roxio Creator 2012 PRO, Wondershare DVD Creator, ImgBurn, Windows DVD Maker, Aimer-soft DVD Creator, Cheeta Burner, Leawo DVD creator, Magic CD & DVD Burner and several others that I downloaded to try and just deleted because they couldn't even start the job. All of which claim to be able to burn a simple collection of Videos into a DVD that can play in a standard DVD player.

Some of the programs were freeware, but most I had to buy. Some were severely lacking in features, especially when it comes to making useable menus that make sense. Some couldn't keep the audio in sync with the video. Almost all gave me crappy looking output even though my source material was HD 1080p and crystal clear. Many of the programs just crashed and ruined blank DVDs including Windows DVD maker. They could not burn the disc that I set up using their own interface.

I went and got ConverXtoDVD, and withing less than an hour on the first try, had burned a successful DVD with easy to follow menus and better than most quality in the final picture. Still not equal to the quality I put in, but acceptable. The menus are simple and I still haven't found if they are fully customizable, in letting me select background images and audio for the menu itself, but I am just so happy to have a program that simply does what it is supposed to do.

I have not done a lot of work with DVDs before, but was always able to burn a single Video file with no trouble. Now that I was trying multiple files, this is the only one that worked.

Sorry if I got the terminology wrong in some of what I said. I am not new to computers and have been using them since the only option available was to build your own before hard drives existed and floppies were 12 inches! I work in IT and understand how to use computers and learn software pretty quickly, so I am fairly confident that it was not due to my ineptness with computers that I have been unable to burn a DVD. It was certainly not for lack of trying.

In any case, I am here to report that out of all the programs I have used and listed, the ONLY one that seems capable of burning a useable DVD from individual video files, (in my case mp4 files) is ConverXtoDVD, even though all the others claim to be able to do it.

So if anyone reading this has a similar problem, here is your answer.

For each attempt with each of the programs I tried, I was using the same computer, the same DVD burner and the same files.

Thank you again to Conscript for understanding my question and making a suggestion that worked!

I use VSO ConvertXtoDVD for regular DVD players, you get better image quality if you specify SP or short projects instead of Auto for project length. Also you won't get any compression if u burn on dual layer dvd's vs. definite compression for anything close to two hours for a standard 4.7gb blank DVD.

I also use Sothink HD DVD creator to burn HD AVC 720p or 1080p movies onto regular 4.7gb blank dvd's to play HD movies on blu-Ray players vs. using the more expensive blank blu-ray disks.
