Influx of cash from the holidays and its about time I sprung for a dvd burner. Am I buying these at the right time in the product cycle? As far as i know 16x is the best available. does anyone know when we might see anything faster? thanks a lot.

Well, there are only 16x DVD ROM's so I'm pretty sure that a 16x DVD burner is as fast as you're going to get.

One company (I can't recall which) has an 18x drive in the works, but who knows if they'll be able to make it work well enough to release officially? 16x is generally regarded as the wall for DVDs. The drives simply can't spin any faster and still be reliable.

Rewritable speeds may increase, but I wouldn't expect anything significant.

Dual layer speeds definitely will increase, but by the time media technology catches up to burner technology, you'll probably be ready to upgrade again.

In other words, just get a 3550A.

I can burn a whole dvd (data) in like 6 minutes or something... It's pretty quick.

Plextor released the 18x drive. Considering the fact that Plextor makes the best optical drives in existence, you can rest assured, that you will get a flawless burn EVERY time with a plextor. (providing you don't use crappy disks).

Drives will probably not get any faster than 16x unless you're talking about a Plextor drive.

16x is plenty fast. If you're thinking about it in terms of CDS, DVD burners will never reach 52x. The drives would have to spin too fast and the lasers would be too costly. It's not physically feasable to do cheaply.

16X drives are cheap as hell these days anyway. You can get one of the best drives (but not a plextor) for under $50. How much cheaper do you want them???
