Dual-Layer DVDs coming out in spring. Wait for 'em.
That's what I'm holding out for.

That would probably be the best idea. I bought mine a year ago before I heard anything about when/if dual layer was going to be released so I just went ahead and bought a single layer DVD+R. It works great. My Sony dvd players play all the dvd+rs I burn and so far all of my friends players(with the exception of 1 movie in a PS2) play them fine too.

I've got a DVD+RW, first gen Sony drive. Used it once. I have one on a computer at work that blows my home computer away so using that one to do DVD's makes a lot more sense to me. But yes, MiniDV + DVD Recordable =

Once 24x DVD Burners are $60 or less then I might go for it.

16x is probably the fastest they will go with currently technology. Kinda like how CD-R ended at 52x.

If you have a digital camera, having a DVD burner to back up your pics, rather than using many, many CD's is a much better option.
Also if you have a large MP3 collection the same applies.

Same here. Spring time is when they come out... Christmas time is when they'll probably become reasonable. ;) 4-8x dual format is the best way to go right now.

It's the right time if you have the need to burn 4gb backups.

Personally, I don't have that much stuff that's important.

I've got some games that I don't play very often that are just sitting in flat directories that can be copied and pasted from cd to pc that are taking up about 45 gigs worth of space...it'd be nice to dump them off to disk and archive for later use.

And you'll probably never use 90% of that after it gets burned. ;)

I've seen a lot of people complain about the price of blank dvd's... I don't get it.

Maybe they just can't do the math...

Unless you're bent on only buying FAR cd's, $16 for 100 CDR's would be a great price.
A CD holds 700MB of data...

A DVD holds 4.7 GB of data (more than 6 CD's worth of data). At the price of CD's above, that's 6 times 16 cents = 96 cents to store one dvd's worth of stuff on 6 CD's.

DVD's can easily be found for under 96 cents apiece, making them CHEAPER than CDR's (assuming not bothering with free after rebate deals)

"But 8x dvd burners are too slow!" What's it take to burn a full dvd at that speed? 15 minutes? That's the equivalent of 6 CD's in 15 minutes, or 2 1/2 minutes per CD. Not that slow in my opinion. I'm guessing that you're only comparing the 8x to 52x.

(note, my #'s are approximate as I'm not an expert! Feel free to correct me.)

oh, and btw, some of you guys cream your pants when you see a deal for a 200GB hard drive for $100. What are you putting on those 200GB that you need such a large hard drive? Video? At that price, you're paying $1 for 2GB of memory. The blank DVD's are less than $1 for 4.7GB - far cheaper than the best hard drive deals these days. **

edit: **with the exception of the $22 deal at Dell

I have one of these drives too. It's great. I plan on keeping it for a long long time.

Why would you really need 24x? 8x can burn a DVD in like 6 minutes...do you really need those extra 4 minutes? :p
