So who here has a dvd burner? Can they copy dvds and then be able to play them in any standard dvd player? Or is it still too early?

I just bought one, works great and for $80 can't beat it.

Yes you can copy DVD's with the right software.

The only downside is blank DVD's are still relatively expensive compared to cdr's.

i think the time to buy one is coming close to me, the burner prices are coming down (80 -150 bucks)
but the media is still a little pricey, but i am def buying one within the 6 months

media isnt as expensive as it used to be
if you keep looking on HD, you can get decent deals,

I think it's still to early.

Once 24x DVD Burners are $60 or less then I might go for it.

bought one last week. paid $130 for a tdk 8x ±R/RW (plextor 708a), and i am satisfied with my purchase. burns a dvd in 8 minutes. rips it to the hard drive in like 20-25 minutes. dual-layers are coming, but its going to be pricey, and the technology wont be quick off the bat (sony is already showing off their dual-layer for a projected april release. but it burns at 2.4x. 2.4x for 8.5 gb's? eep.) so, for $130, i figure it'll last me well until the dual-layers are at a higher speed and media is reasonbly priced.

In Germany the tradition is for the person celebrating their birthday to be the one to give gifts. Besides,I wanted to get him one for Xmas and ran out of money,so this will be just a bit late:)

no problem.. i have a Plextor PX-708A which is awesome
it burns a DVD in like 7 minutes, and it works fine in my Pioneer and Toshiba set top DVD players using Optodisc DVD-R media

works like a CHARM.

i don't think so, 1layer isn't enough space for good vid. still not cheap either.

Not true really, using DVD shrink I really cannot notice a difference in movies compressed even 50%. Depends on how demanding you are too I guess, but I can't see it on my 27" nor 42" tv's.

I agree. Even after using XCopy or Shink, my movies still look terrific.

Using a Pioneer A06, btw.

The time is here. With the Newegg deals it's time for everyone to buy one. Yes dual layer is around the corner, but it will be very expensive initially. Now you can own a DVD burner for about $100 and the media is affordable.

I have one... never used it. It is a 4x
I don't burn much of anyhting, really. I had an external DVD burner, but did not RTFM and ended up making 8 coasters. This was back when DVD blanks cost over $2.00 each. So it sat for almost a year and I sold it to a board member for 1/3 what I paid. Now I have this internal 4x DVD burner for the past 2 months and I have never used it.

:)

I'm waiting for dual layer at a good price to be cheap.
I know I'll be waiting another year or so, but I'll deal.
