My dad is into making videos and such (he tapes a lot of weddings in the summer). He recnetly got a new PC with a burner, but it doesn't seem to burn disks that work in home units, very irritating. He also has about a million VHS tapes that should be put on DVD (family videos etc). His camcorder is a Video8 Sony (I believe). Are there any good units that let you copy VHS and files from the PC? I would like a unit that will support all formats (+/- R/RW) as well as the 8Gig DVD disks.

Home DVD players are not generalized units like those for PCs. It is always safest to use DVD-R blank disks for playback on home players. Only the very latest can deal with DVD+R burned disks unless the book type is set to make it look like a DVD-R. And they can only play certain formats of data files - you have to look at the specs of the player to find out what it can deal with and create your disks with files that the player can use.
