Here is the thing I am getting a DVD Burner because there not much more than just a normal DVD-ROM drive plus it seems stupid to not get one instead of just a DVD-ROM drive. I mainly want it for reading DVDS right now but I am sure I will burn some.

I want to use it for DVD-RW or DVD+RW dvds a lot because you can reuse these dvds a lot. I don't keep a lot of data forever. Some but not to much. There is no point in my opinion because I will never look at it again if I save everything to DVD-R or DVD+R dvds in my opinion.

Which DVD Burner would be good to get right now? There so many new ones out now but very few reviews and real life stories about them right now. Should I just get a older model instead just to be sure?

Also what media and speed should I get please? Thanks.
 
Any of the Lite-Ons or the newer NECs (2xxx+) will do very well.
The 3540, based on their model #s so far, is just a minor update to the 3520.
However, with 8x +DL and 4x -DL, it looks like a good buy for under $50 (for the OEM, anyway).
 
okay, if you're haveing troubles picking drive when they cost 1-2 dollars apart, then you'll really have problems picking the rest of your systems.
There are already a million threads adking this question, did you try searching?
You can't go wrong with anycurrent burner made by NEC, Pioneer, and Benq. THey are just so similar nowThe people here will tell you to get what they got. I personally got a NEC 3520a.

Dude, you actually read newegg reviews? THey are censored sh!t. any review that points out something bad they don't post. Have you ever actually seen a newegg product that was not 4 of 5 star? People at AT have already proved this, as there were threads about this.

Yes I have. I read every thread but some of them are outdated.

 
Mike, sry, but you make me laugh. Did you search dvd or nec or pioneer? So you read about 70 threads from this month alone but you are still unclear? I dosen't matter if they are outdated or not, as long as they talk about the burners you want. Seriously, they all end up saying get whichever one you want, because these days they are all dirt cheap

Pioneer, IMO, makes the best drives. Although there is nothing worng with NEC when my current burner croaks i will go with pioneer. But you cant beat NECs pricing! Most media manufacturers test their media in pioneer drives.
 
Some have faster ripping speed than others. Like the Pioneer 109 mod upgraded to the A09. NEC has a lot better firmware and people mod it with updates more often. Some are very picky about media.

NEC is always a good bet. My ND-1100A has a CDR write offset of +48 (which is *very* low). I've never had a problem with media.

I did have to update my firmware to burn at 4x, but I don't consider that a big deal.

Usually any difference in speed between same-rated drives (IE, comparing 16x with 16x, 8x with 8x, etc.) is negligible.

I know all about the censorship of their reviews. I still read them. I have seen plenty of items that had 1 or 2 stars.

It dosen't matter which one you get. The 40 will be fine if you get it, its just the 20 with better firmware and faster speeds.

so if you wnat a litte faster burns, 40. If youwant to save 6 bucks with still good performace, 20

NEC 3500 ~= 3520 ~= 3540.

It might even be close enough that a 3520A could be firmware upgraded to the 3540. There is go good reason at all not to get the 3540. Really--it's $44 shipped ($47 for beige). The features and quality will be about the same, with the 3540 having s lightly faster +DL burns, and it will do -DL.

In features and quality, the 2500 and up have all been pretty much the same, with burns getting faster and burn quality continually inching up. So just quit worrying and order. You'll have a drive, it will work great with anything but the crappiest media, and all will be well.
