DVD burner?

Is NOW a good time to purchase 8X DVD burners?

What are considered the good brands?

Acard, Acer BenQ, Aopen, Artec, Asus, Bytecc, Cendyne, Creative Labs, Cyberhome, ETT, Generic, Goldstar, Hewlett Packard, House Brand, IoMagic, Iomega, JVC, Jwin, LACIE, LG ELECTRONICS, LG International, Lite-On, Memorex, MicroSolutions, Mitsumi, MSI, NEC, Nero, Nu, Optorite, Pacific Digital, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Plextor, Ricoh, Samsung, Sony, TDK, Teac, Toshiba, Verbatim, Xcase, Lite On,. Pioneer,

Are folks going to Newegg? Or Dell? Or Fatwalet?

Is it a good time to purchase now, or should I wait for some new uber technology just over the horizon?

My thinking is that at prices under $100, I have no excuse not to have one.

From what I have read, right now the NU tech that Anand reviewed is good, and I have heard a lot abouth the NEC-2500a. Either would be fine and they both under $100.

If you don't care about dual layer, now is a good time to buy. But, I would wait. My DVD burner is a Lite-On LDW-851S, I bought it for $80, and it is pretty good. The NEC one is also good for cheap. Newegg would be a good place to buy from.

Yes, you can get a burner for cheap. Newegg is a great place and has about the best price. If you find it cheaper, the reseller rating will be in the toilet. As for burners, it is like asking about which processor or video card. The most frequent answers will be Plextor, NEC, and Pioneer. I prefer Pioneer, but the others are about as suitable 😉 ASUS uses Pioneer components as do some others.

Oh, someone may say wait as 12x-16x or dual layer are coming out. Media is not available yet. And if you fall for the wait scenario, there will always be something better coming out to wait for. Analysis paralysis.

Do I really need it?
How much will it cost?

May / June you should see the drives and media. You really need it if you want to backup your DVD collection without compressing the file with DVD Shrink. The drives I have seen announced will be a little over $200, dropping in prices after that I imagine.

The dual layer media will be expensive at first until they are adopted by more people. Of course any dual layer media will be cheaper that buying a new DVD after a scratch 🙂

It isnt Dual layer as in there two protective layers, it dual writable layers. Effectivly doubling the capacity of the media.

I just brought a Lite-On 8xDVD burner, not sure on model. got it yesterday, and im very impressed with it. Its almost 100% silent when burning. And takes about 10-15mins to burn a whole disk.

I would say the bigger question is, do you need one? So far, my "burning" does not even fill a CDR (80 min), so there would be no point to buying a DVD burner at the present time. In any case, if I were to buy one, it would be an external, probably Firewire, with both + and - formats - possibly Plextor.

I didn't mean it would protect the new burning media from scratches.... Backing up on the new media (8.5 Gb dual layer, is the exact same size as commercial DVD's) you can protect your investement (movies bought) from scratching and being toast 🙂
