DVD Burner - Won't burn DVD's

Darn thing just suddenly stopped working properly.

It does:
Recognize CDROM's
Burn CD-R's
Recognize burned DVD-R's

It does not:
Burn DVD-R's (with Pinnacle Studio 8) - it just keeps ejecting the discs (tried several, including a new spindle), and saying "incorrect disc media type, please insert correct media." Or it just says "Disc burning failed - unknown error."

My brother said it was working fine yesterday. Today, it just doesn't work. I don't think anything new has been installed on the machine.

I went into Device Manager (where it shows up as a DVD/CDROM drive - Sony DRU 510A) and uninstalled the drive, then rebooted. Still the same problem.

In Windows Explorer, it usually shows as a "CD-ROM drive." Although right now it's showing as "DVD-RW drive" for some reason.

Nero 6.0.0.0 seems to recognize a blank DVD-R. It says "Total capacity 0 MB, Available capacity 4,489 MB" and "The Disc is empty" However, I can't seem to make it burn to a DVD. Under "Compilation Properties" the dropdown box for "CD" is greyed out.

Not good. I just successfully copied a DVD (that I had previously created) with Nero 6. But now the drive is back to not working again. Not looking like a software problem here...

I had the same problem the other day with nero 5.5. I put in a couple of disks since they were cheap media and I thought I had a bad disk. I had the same results with probobly 6 disks. Finally I shut down nero and started over from scratch and worked properly after that.

This happened after making probobly 6 disks with out problems. And hasn't happened since.

Have you checked for a firmware upgrade for your sony?

Turning the computer off and on several times appears to have no effect on the problem.

There doesn't seem to be a firmware upgrade. Sony's website doesn't seem to have my particular problem listed. Any other ideas?
