DVD Burner & Software Pre-purchase advice ?

I'm running XP Pro sp2 on a PIII@ 1ghz...
Seagate 60gb 7200 ATA 100..
512mb sdram

I'm thinking my best bet is a 16x Pioneer, NEC, or LG run with software that alows speed control...
so I can run at 2-4x...
Hopefully this will not overwelm my processor & enable more reliable, error-free burns...
(My PRIMARY concern)

Any help you can offer relating to my reasoning, burner, & or software choices would be greatly appreciated !!!

Thanks,
D

Depending on what you will be burning, I/O is really more important
than processing speed when burning discs. Drive space is next in line.
A fast, defragged drive to allow continous reads and writes from the buffer.

Choice of software again depends on what you want to accomplish.

i'm going to go with the NEC 3500. best drive and also one of the cheapest. i have two of them. my xp2800 & xp1600 machine can both burn just fine at 8x. don't have any faster media to test it beyond that, but hey, 8x is good enough for me.

Thanks for your post...I'm uncertain about your use of I/O...Input-output?..are you referring to read-write
between the HD & Burner?... Could the diference between 2mb & 8mb HD buffer be a major factor?
(I can upgrade to 8mb-80gig@7200rpm seagate for $39-with rebate)

While audio & data will be my prime objective on this machine...I WOULD like to do as much video as possible...if only between my HD & burner...

Software I am considering, with stated reqirements;
Adaptec MYDVD...PIII@800-1ghz recomended
Sonic MYDVD...PIII@1ghz---1.5 recomended

Nero 6r & Roxio emc7...
Data-Audio...PIII@500
Out of reach;
Video Authoring...PIII@1.2ghz
Video Capturing...PIIII@1.6

(I will most likely start with Nero xpress oem, which I can find no info on)

Thanks Again,
D

I have just about settled on the Plextor 712A...Plextor states that the PX716A requires a P4@1.4
The NEC 3500 would have been my choice based on Arand's roundup..(& I have 6 LGs & love them)
BUT I am afraid of the unlisted processor requirements with my PIII...

What processors are you running? & what is your cpu usage when reading & writting with the NEC 3500?
I'd be happy with a good quality, reliable 4x burn...(How long DOES it take to burn 4.5 gigs @ 4x anyway?)

Thanks,
D

the cpu usage on both machines is practically nothing. i think it hits a max of like 9%. memory and HDD space like LiL said is more of a factor than your processor.

Correct me if I'm wrong; your xp1600 clocks at 1.53mhz, & your 2800@ 2.25+...
both these exceed the only listed requirement of 1.4 for a 16x burner, the PX716A...

I just ran a CDRW burn of 242mb to get a read on cpu usage...(which I will attach if I can figure how to)

While it ran at an average of 2% to 9% (with ocasional spikes to 20%+) ...a good part of the 1st 20% of the burn ran at over 50%

?

Just found a listing for a ND-3520A BG...(IF that is the same drive?)...PIII@ 450mhz & 128mb ram reqired..

I believe we've found a winner!
Thanks,

I'll let you know how it turns out...
