different formats. if you are backing up movies, you are better off with - as most home dvd players will play them. most burners now are dual format so it doesn't really matter. go to google for the specifics on the differences.

+ has more "features"
- is more compatible (something like 86% vs 92%)

in either case, if it's a recent drive, it will read either format. unless you're planning on burning games for your ps2 or xbox, either format is fine (game consoles tend to like -). also be aware of the prices. last time i checked, - media could be had for about half the cost of + media.

personally, i'd just get a dual format dual layer (search newegg). i know there's a DL going for about $80 nowadays

My personnal experience is that for movie go with - and data with +.
When I started at DVD writing, I bought a 50 DVDR- tower from a good brend. I haven't burn one movie based DVD that my home dvd reader had any problem with. Then one day, I tried some data disk backup on DVDR- and surprise, one of them I was unable to read some files because of CRC errors. Then I started to read on the NET and my understanding is that DVDR+ have some corection features that reduce "tremendously" the number of possible CRC error.

To this day, I have burn hundreds of DVD in both format and no error anymore. You just have to chose the correct format depending on your needs. :)

"normal" now a days, yes.

I have been burning on + media, played the disc in a regular Sony DVD changer and I Panasonic DVD player that is 3 years old -- no problems. My 5 year old Sony DVD refuses to recognize even CDRs. Just buy the things you want and try them, It will work.
