Dvd burner Problem

Hey ive got a NEC DVD burner that Ive had for over a year. recently however out of the blue it will not burn DVDs anymore. when i insert a DVD-R(and ive tried many kinds) it will only detect it as a CD-R not a DVD-R. even the icon under my computer changes from DVD-RW to CD-R. However i can play DVD movies fine and CDs etc... it will just not burn DVDs or even reconize that a DVD-R is in the rom. I really think its a software problem on my computer. any ideas?
