DVD burner not responding

Running a Dell 4600 p4 3.0 800fsb 512 ram 160g sata. Just added a 16x DVD burner NEC 3500 from newegg and when I put a DVD in the drive, it says not responding. I dont know what to do. Could it be a bad drive?

Does the drive show up in your device manager?

yes it does. I even uninstalled it and windows found it again.

Update the firmware on your drive too.

Hard to explain unless a very long winded ordeal, but it will prob help to update the aspi as mentioned.
