DVD Burner not recognizing a DVD

Im attempting to rip a DVD, and my dvd burner doesnt seem to read the dvd's....after I put it in and out and restart a few times, it reads it, but it takes a long time and way too much. I have a sony 2x multi format black faceplate dvd-burner. Is there anyway I can fix this.
 
What program are you using to rip?
What DVD playing program do you have installed?
Have you updated the drive's firmware recently?
