DVD Burner - looking for advice

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but i thought General forum seemed adequate enough.

Now that prices are getting more reasonable, and the speeds seem to be slightly less sluggish, im seriously considering getting a DVD burner over the summer. Now i know there are still a lot of different formats out there right now, and im not entirely sure which companies are teh more reliable these days in the DVD burning arena.

Plextor were always a good buy for CD-RW drives, but who is the equivalent for DVD drives. What discs are cheap and readable on a standard DVD-R drive. And how long can i expect to wait for one of those discs to be burnt.

I guess i just generally want an idea of cost, performance and advice from people who have actually used the things.......

Thanks in advance

Sony makes what seems to probabily be the best in my opinion, they have tyhe fastest ones, and they do both DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W.

Pioneer just announced the A06 and it will be dual format like the Sony. I prefer the Optorite dual format DD0203, that has 8mb cache and Sanyo HD Burn technology.

does the 8mb buffer make it faster like on the newer hard drives??

Or is it purely a reliability feature to make write errors less likely. And is 4x likely to stay the maximum speed for a long time?

I doubt that 4x will remain the fastest speed for a long time. I bet the speeds ramp up somwhat faster than they did for CD burners just because the industry has more experience with this sort of thing now. I remember some other thread where they were talking about new lasers for faster dvd burners.

But even so, waiting for anything faster may be too long of a wait. The prices now are pretty good and 4x is reasonably fast (a little less than 20minutes for a dvd).

pionner A05, you can get it for about $150 AR, great performer

There are currently 8 A05 Refurbs, from an authorized refurb distrubitor, on Ebay for $100.

anyone know if all IDE DVD drives are compatible with the IDE to SCSI convertors?

I have a drive bay, SCSI ID and cable end ready for placement 🙂

I like my Pioneer reader, but sony is the shiznit for the burner, however that reason is keeping the price $250+..so everyone stop buying for a couple months 🙂.
