DVD burner issues

I have a samsung DVD burner. Sometime is works as it should other times my computer can't see it or when I try see what's on the DVD it takes a long while searching and says "insert dvd".

It can work fine one second and then not the other.

Anybody have any idea what the problem is?
 
More than likely it's the burner itself.

Try a different data cable and/or plug it into a different connector on the motherboard if possible to troubleshoot. I realize it's an intermittant problem.

I've had several die like that on me.
 
i thought it was a bad sony dvd before. I RMA'd it for the samsung. same problem. It's an SATA drive. I guess I could try a different port.
