DVD Burner in USB External Enclosure?

Ensign

Senior member
I'm thinking of getting a DVD Burner and mounting it in my USB 2.0 External Enclosure so I could easily use it with multiple systems. How much of a speed hit will I take from mounting the DVD Burner internally? Will burning be as reliable while using it in the external enclosure?

Hope this is the right forum.

Thanks!

Well, I've never used an external DVD burner, but I would think they would be just fine based on USB2.0 transfer rates.

A typical DVD drive burning at 8X transfers about 11-12 megabytes per second. In comparision, high-speed USB2.0 has a maximum transfer rate of 60 megabytes per second (480 Mbits/second).

Granted, you'll hardly ever see the full transfer rate with any USB2.0 enclosure, but even if you get 30MB/second, that should still be good enough for even 16X DVD burning.

Sounds good to me. Thanks!

I have an external Plextor PX-708UF2 - it is on Firewire and works beautifully. I also have three CD/RW externals, and they are also on Firewire an have worked great for many years. Going back to SCSI days, I have always used external burners - more reliable than internal - no power impact and less CPU impact when burning. The downside for some is they cost a bit more - but, . . . you get what you pay for. 🙂
