I am thinking of getting a dvd burner need some info on the format and burning speeds. Firstly, there is the + and - standerds, whats the diff and if a burner just supports + is that cool. secondly, at 4x dvd burning speed how long will it take to burn a 4.7 gig disk, dose a 4x dvd burner burn at the same speed a cd burner at 4x? ohhh and will a p3 - 800 with 128 mb ram work fine with a dvd burner. and finally check out this deal is it good, bare in mind I have to have a cd/dvd burner combo.. the price is in canadian dollars.

there isnt much difference between + and -. somepeople think - is more compatible with stand alone dvd players but in my experiances, both work fine on my standalone.

it will take about 15-20 minutes to burn a 4.7Gb dvd @ 4X

DONT but from tigerdirect

The x for cd's vs. dvd's is definitely different. My 2.4x is around 3385KB/s IIRC. That's equal to 22.6x on a CD burner if my # is correct.

So a 4x DVD is probably around 37.6x cd burn speed.

Tiger direct jerked me off for 2 months on a paid of USB extensions. first it was sent to the wrong address, but they couldnt tell me where they sent it, then it was out of stock, I threated to file fraud on my credit card pmt, and 2 weeks later i got my $8 worth of USB extensions. I was pissed.

They would return my emails, 2-3 days later, and the guy who was typing the emails definately didnt speak english.

I recently bought a 5 pack of each + and - , form wallyworld for $11 bucks each (memorex).

the dual format burner did great with the DVD-R (the ones with the [RW] symbol) at 4 x, it to 15-25 mins to burn 4.7 GB DVD.

but with the DVD+R i was only able to brn at 2.4x. that knocked it to lik 40-50 mins each, ugg.

I would recomend DVD-R or combo

dvd-r media is generally cheaper. so thats what most people use. dual format is more or less protection in case one finds a good deal on +r media... burn time isnt too big of a deal. i only burn two times a week at 2x. just set it when you sleep =) hehe 2x is cheaper by $5 =)

I ordered from tigerdirect once, got my stuff but still wasn't too great. A hard drive I ordered from them said in stock, then the next day after I order it they tell me its on backorder and should arrive later that day, week later is when they ship it out... and takes another week to get here, not to mention I didn't have shipping choice or a tracking number.

You must have confused things here. The ones with the RW logo are DVD+R media (it's the DVD+RW Alliance's logo).

Both 4x DVD±R media will burn in 14-16 min. A 2.4x DVD+R will burn in 22-24 min.
