just got into the burning dvd market and was wondering what brands to hop on or to stay away from... I know BB has an online special for a 50 pack of Memorex (made in taiwan) 16X DVD +/- R's for 14.99. Is this decent media to use?

Bingo.

Just wait for BB to run a sale on Fuji media, and pick the MIJ product. In my experience, the vast majority of media at BB is made in Taiwan, but if you're lucky there will be a few MIJ's available.

You want to know manufacturers, not brands.

Brands are stamped on discs.

Manufacturers make the discs.

You want Taiyo Yuden. You can buy unbranded TY blanks online at sites like rima.com

Either Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical Corp) or FujiFilm (Taiyo Yuden) tend be the favorites at the CD Freaks.com forum. I've used only Verbatim and have been very satisfied with them.

Memorex should be ok, I like TDK which has never failed on me. Ive burned a few coasters with Ritek before.

i have used Sony and they seem to be great. Burnt a few toasters with memorex. Fuji and verbatim seem to be the top.

I've had skipping on Verbatim 8x DVD-R's, the OEM style shiny top with no label surface at all, just "Verbatim 8x DVD-R" in the transparent inner ring.
Ridata's have always worked great for me and my friends, although I've sometime seen light dry-rot in the middle, and occasionally on Taiyo Yuden's as well.
