Looking for a good way to put a whole lot of DVD's into a very small space, I bought an external HDD. Whats the best program for "ripping," (though i know thats not the right term, is it?) my DVD collection onto my disk for convenient viewing.... do I need a separate program to PLAY the DVD files or does the "ripping" program come with a good viewing application?? I need something vista compatible.... and I consider myself to be proficient technically speaking (if this needs to get involved) ....

Nero can do rip DVD but not copyright dvd movies into your hard drive. Also I think DVD Shrink does the job too.

The media player in Vista Home Premium can play the ripped files just as if it was a DVD, menus and all. Kinda neat. Earlier versions of media player may do that too, I don't know.

Well DVD Shrink gets them into an ISO, and from there all you need is a really good transcoder to make .avi's at about 700mbs, give or take. This usually gives really nice picture, and pretty good audio.

Sorry to but in but I have a question and it may help the OP out as well.

Which is "better" Divx or Xvid?
Which programs can be used to run each?

Use DVDDecrypter to rip the movie to your hard-drive.
It's 2007 and x264 is where its at: Download MeGUI and use x264 to compress the movie.

x264 video track + AC3 5.1 audio track = Win! (Or you could use stereo)

Here's a nice guide: Link

You didn't specify what file size you would like to compress your movies to. These are screenshots from a 700MB rip of Pulp Fiction: not bad for a two-and-a-half hour movie. A 1GB version ought to be better.

x264 video + 2Ch-96kbps ABR mp3 audio

Playback is simple: I use WMP11+ffdshow
To the person who asked, I don't know if the current version of DivX has made any improvements but the last time I checked, Xvid was preferred to DivX and I saw some screenshot comparisons on a bunch of websites that supported this.
