DVD backup

I know this isn't exactly off topic but I'd like to get several opinions on this....

I'm starting to backup my DVD collection to hard drive. Currently I'm using DVD Decrypter and AutoGK & Xvid.

This setup works fine but I just became aware that the author is no longer going to support AutoGK so I'm wondering if there is something possibly better and more importantly with future support.

AGK sucks anyway. I use VDub.

uhh.. considerint agk isn't really a program, more of a front end to use a whole bunch of programs.. including virtualdub....

you could use gordianknot... is that continuing? if not, doom9 has megui or something? i will continue to use autogk.. not for movies.. but for my short auto-x clips.. fastest way to get dv->xvid quickly for me (unless anyone has other suggestions).

Used to use Gordian knot as well. Good thing about it is you could always upgrade a piece of it. So technically as long as nandub, vdub, xvid and the company continue cranking out new versions it will never expire.

I'm not so sure, already the latest version of Divx breaks capability with AutoGK. Maybe Xvid will be more forgiving but without at least minor updates AutoGK will die a premature death.

Maybe you should consider using a h264 like x264 for video? It's better quality, I find, at the low-mid bitrate range than either XviD 1.1.0 or DivX 6 (or Helium), too. And vorbis is a very nice audio codec for low-high bitrates (for extremely low use wma). Also, I would go with using VirtualDub mod for conversion, and use .mkv or .ogm.
