Hello Windows software fans, I have come seeking advice and discussion. Before I pay a bunch to get a new version of the Nero suite and Slysoft/Elby software, I was wondering if there are good free alternatives nowadays.

I used DVD43 years ago, and it worked good and was safe then. Does anybody know if it is still adware and malware free? I used it with Nero then, and never did try DVD shrink, which I heard was the best free backup software.

Has anybody tried both that can give me a features and usability comparison? Was CSS decryption added to DVD shrink yet? I think I maybe remember there being some law about a software package not being able to do both things. Very confusing how the DMCA allows for one backup, but doesn't say companies can't make backing up very troublesome. Thanks for any help!

Doesn't just using AnyDVD (w or w/o HD) only do decryption and ripping? I suppose I could consider doing future backups to a non-physical source.

I have observed that the Slysoft products work well, but it would be like $100 for AnyDVDHD and CloneDVD for 1 year, or $155 for lifetime updates (only option I'd consider besides 1 year). I got a decent deal on Nero 7 which I seemed to get good value from, and just want to make sure I get a good value again.

If you are just planning on doing DVD---->DVD backups, then AnyDVD+DVD Shrink will work. Use ImgBurn to burn to DVD-R. The only software you'll have to pay for is AnyDVD. I've been using CloneDVD for about five years and MUCH prefer it to DVD Shrink, but only you can decide if it's worth paying for. AnyDVD is absolutely worth the $$$$. SlySoft does discount periods every few months, too, so if you're patient, you should be able to pick it up for 15-20% off.
