DVD Backup Question

When ripping a movie from DVD to .avi (for backup purposes, of course), I am told to select a filesize.....now, I know most .avi's of movies I've seen are around 700mb or so. All the tutorials I am reading about the program I have chose to use (autoGk) just say to choose 700mb or 1400mb, without really explaining it.

There is also an option for custom filesize, which I'd prolly end up using, but my main question is, however, what is a good standard to keep in mind (mainly, how many Mbs per minute of movie?)

Is there a point in which a movie is "too long" to make into a 700mb movie w/o losing quality big time? I can't quite seem to figure out a good combo of settings that work well....any ideas?

The movies you've seen that are around 700mb are usually encoded in Divx or Xvid. What you probably need to do is rip the movie into AVI and then re-encode it using the Divx/Xvid codec.

Sorry for not being clear. The program I am using encodes the movie using divx/xvid (whichever I choose) and outputs it as a .avi file
 
DVD decrypter is like 2 clicks. It copies the contents to your hard drive, processes it to fit on a single layer DVD, then plop in the dvd and burn. You;ll save a lot more time doing it that way than trying to convert to CD size, plus you can keep the menu and bonus material.

Ah, another misinterpretation (I better learn to explain better....and by the looks of it, type 😱)....I am simply backing them up to avi's that I will keep on my computer. I will not be burning backup copies of the disk, but rather will store the copies on my media center pc.

I just want the backups for my own use....mainly so I don't have to be changing DVDs all the time (just select them from my HTPC)

I did this for 70+ movies, but I would suggest using Nero or similar software to do the actual compression and burning to reduce the number of bad burns.
