Source -> creative audigy 2 zs dvd-audio sampler DVD VS. 55kbs / 22khz mp3s (terrible encoding) VS. 192kbs/44hz mp3
Sound Card -> Audigy 2 zs Plat vs. Nforce 2 On-board Soundstorm
Speaker -> Logitech z 560 4.1

We just spent a hour listening to the different setups / source. My friend claims that the 55kbs/22khz mp3 sounds EXACTLY the same as DVD-audio.
Anyone else that CAN NOT tell the difference?

I noticed a HUGH difference between the 192kbs vs 55kbs, same as DVD-audio vs. 192kbs.
The DVD-audio was BYFAR the best to me, I can hear so much more detail and clearer soundstage.

Of course there's a huge difference. The MP3s are lossy and 56kbs is an incredibly low bitrate. 192 kbs is the min I ever encode at, I usually like to do 192-256 kbs vbr.

Obviously DVD-Audio is lossless, so you can't even compare the two. Your friends are morons or listening through tin cans attached with string.

and the hardware / speaker outputs used..

That's why I post the source -> sound card -> speakers...

On this setup/ or something similar, is there anyone on this forum that CANNOT hear the difference?

z560 isn't exactly hifi... but its certainly enough to tell 22khz mp3 from even cd audio. heck i could tell on much cheaper speakers...most anyone could i bet 128kbs 44khz is already pretty obvious on most any system.

In terms of HOW it sounds yes.
It terms of being able to HEAR the sounds not so much so.
This guy listening is obvioulsy 3/4 of the way deaf. I know people with tinitis that could hear the difference between those two test encodes, probably using cheap headphones too. Granted both would sound like shyte on cheap headphones, but at least they could hear the difference.

Do the same test on some high quality headphones. I've got z560s as well and I find them extremley lacking on the highs where a lot of the "interesting" stuff resides.

ROFL, he can't tell the difference between DVD-Audio VS. 55kpbs.

250MB file (DVD-audio) vs. 1.58MB (55kpbs mp3)

How is that possible?

Oh btw, he is not deaf in anyway.

I think you misunderstand. I DO think he's "deaf", perhaps tone deaf in certain areas. Seriously, this much a difference in sound quality and he cant hear it? I would advise he go in for a general hearing test if he can find a free one somewhere.

I don't think he can tell the difference in all the extra 'Details' in the music.

For example, we tried on HD580 with a good source vs. cheapo headphones, he says they are about the same to him.

it 'sounds' like your friends a lost cause. Some people just can't hear the differences.
