DVD audio problem

For some reason, my PC's DVD burner/player (a memorex dual layer drive) will play audio files just fine, but it will not play the audio for my DVDs. I have tried updating firmware, changing to analog output instead of digital, and using different players (windows media 10 and real player 10.5). None of this seems to matter.

any suggestions about where I might look next?

Is the MPEG2 decoder embedded in the player (real player or windows media)? How do update the decoder? This seems the next logical place to look since audio CDs play fine through the DVD burner/player.

I tried that. I reinstalled all the drivers from the disk that came with the DVD. I only exlcuded the crap that they bundle with it like a picture viewing sofware which I assume is not related to the DVD video/audio.

DVD-Audio can only be played on DVD Players with DVD-Audio support (most DVD Players do not support this format).

What brand and model is your DVD drive?

I have never heard of that. My Dell laptop plays the DVDs just fine. I guess they have DVD audio support

It is Memorex Dual Layer DVD 16X burner. I guess that is the last time I buy something brand new. I got it just after the dual layer came out. I have never burned a dual layer DVD. they are slow and expensive. I t is more cost effective to just use regular 4.7 GB DVD discs.

Real DVD-Audio requires specific software and hardware support for its digital protection. The only real solution available that will play the full resolution 24-bit DVD-Audio are Audigy 2s/4s and Xi-Fis. It doesn't have much to do with the PC DVD drive itself. If you don't have these soundcards, but still get music, most likely you're just listening to the backup DD/DTS tracks.

I think we're getting confused here between DVD-Audio, and the audio on a DVD-video disc. I don't think the OP means DVD-Audio discs, I think he means he can't get audio in movies. Correct?

If that is the case, then yes, no matter what DVD drive you have, it should be able to output the audio without a problem. It sounds like there's something misconfigured with the DVD software you're using or something along those lines.

I don't think Fike is talking about DVD-Audio, he is talking about the dvd audio in DVD movies, correct?

In either case, you need to install specific software to view/listen to dvd movies and to listen to DVD-Audio discs. Do you have anything like PowerDVD or WinDVD installed on your computer?

I have been using windows media player on my dell laptop with no problems. Why would I need extra software for my homebuilt desktop?

Decoding DD/DTS costs money. Windows by itself doesn't include one, the Dell laptop probably included a copy of PowerDVD which has the DD/DTS decoder.

im not talking about the drivers for the dvdrom drive. im talking about the software that comes with it. most notably, powerdvd or other player that includes the dvd encoders.

Bingo..

Goto cole2k.net and download the codec pack. It includes fully functional Dolby Digital AND DTS decoders. Once you install those, you should have audio in your movies.

That sounds like the solution. I will try tonight and see if it works. And...as a matter of fact, the Dell does have some dedicated DVD software. I wonder if I can find a copy of it on the dell installation disks and put it on my desktop?
