DVD audio issue

I recently upgraded my computer to:
MSI P965 Platinum
E6400 @ 2.13
Sapphire X1950 XT 256 MB
2 GB ddr2-800
Lite-on SOHW-1693S
Onboard Sound (Realtek HD Audio)
Logitech z-5300e 5.1 speakers

After I installed PowerDVD 7, I put in the Miami Vice DVD to watch, and I heard a low-level popping/stuttering on audio. So, I tried VLC, and playback is noticeably worse (audio & video stuttering this time). I tried Windows Media Player 11, same thing. I even tried some other dvd playback software which claimed it was made for Dual Core processors, but the same thing happened. I checked my DVD drive, and it's still on Ultra DMA (I read elsewhere that popping could be the result of the DVD being set on PIO instead of DMA). It does this with Pirates of the Caribbean 2, as well. I'm beginning to wonder if I would be well-served buying a sound card, rather than using onboard sound. I'm also beginning to question my sanity because the sound is right at the low end of hearing range. Thanks for your help in advance.
