I just bought a Toshiba SD-1700 DVD player (at Penney's for $99). It doesn't come with a S-video cable.

I called Radio Shack and a 6' cable is $14.99.

Is it worth getting? If so, know where I can get one for a lower price?

If you buy an s-video cable in circuit city or best buy they'll charge you an arm and a leg

I've used that 6 foot radio shack s-video cable before and it works just fine.

If you have a really big expensive TV you might want a better quality s-video cable, but if you just have a 27 incher or so with an s-video input i'd just go with the radio shack cable.

Do you need one?
That depends on you TV. If it has an s-video input and a good picture tube, you will notice a difference.
I can notice it between the standard coaxial, composite video(rca type) and s-video.
S-video is very good.

If you have the option to hook up the component video outputs, do that. They are even better...

I heard S-Video was better then component.

Anyway, as far as going S-Video, I'd recommend it ONLY if your TV has a direct S-Video port in the back. If you have to plug it into a VCR and at some point the signal switches to composite (ie: your TV doesn't have an s-video input, or the VCR is hooked up to a 2nd VCR without s-video), putting down a lot more cash for s-video cables is a waste.

I wouldn't use S-video at all then. I'd use the component outputs. Y H G thing.. I fogot how it exact was called.

You probably heard s-video was better than composite. Lots of people get them mixed up. Here's the general quality spectrum, from worst to best:

<worst>
RF
composite
s-video
component
<best>
