When I watch DVD's on my computer the viewer defaults to approx 800x600 resloution. I know it's a little less but don't remember the exact #'s. Is this the most the DVD can actually give. Is that the highest definition I can get? What happens if you watch DVD's on a high definition 42' TV. Is the viewing area still only somthing like 800x600?

It seems kind of lame. Especially since my monitor is set to 1280x960. I'm kind of curious. Especially about the bigger TV screens. That is if they are having to disply only an 800x600 image.

NTSC DVD resolution is 720x480. Someday we'll see higher resolutions like the T2 Extreme DVD (includes a 1920x1080p/24 windows media version) when a standard is decided upon. Enthusiasts are using scalers (primarily HTPC's) to upscale the images to display on their large screens. The results can offer dramatically better Picture Quality dependant on many factors.

I love Lucasfilm widescreen for Clones. 2000x1000. Rules - just for theater though.
