I am building a system for 12YO stepson.

Logisys Phantom Case
Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU in Titanium Green
DFI LANParty NFII Ultra B
Mobile Athlon 2500+ (slight overclock)
Corsair Value Ram (2 x 512 PC3200) (green heatspreaders)
Chaintech GeForce 5700.

He wanted as much green as possible, so I found the Antec CDRW in green (the DVD from that company seems to be pretty much gone now unless I want to pay a large price premium) then found a floppy and DVD drive in green from www.buyxg.com. I've requested an RMA from them, but would prefer making things work to swapping out parts, as I really want to get this job done one of these days.

The DVD drive plays DVDs just fine. However, if I use it to install files from a CDROM, it gives me messages saying the install file is corrupt, etc. The install disks work in the CDRW, just not in the DVD. Device manager simply calls it a DVD drive, and I cannot find a manufacturer's name anywhere. The color is slightly different from the Antec CDRW, so I think that is not the maker. I've tried swapping cables and moving it around the IDE chain with no success. Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice for me, or is RMA the only thing I have left. It seems I cannot even try flashing the firmware on this drive, since I do not know who makes it.

The vendor says the floppy is a Mitsumi. It says Sony somewhere on the case. If I try to run Memtest at boot, 9 times out of 10 it ignores the floppy and goes straight to Windows. If I try to access the A drive from Explorer, it usually tells me to insert a disk and try again. Removing and reinserting the disk enough times usually gets it recognized, but that is clearly not the way things should work. I've used multiple floppies as well.

RMA is the obvious course for both devices. Does anyone have any other ideas for me?

Thanks in advance.

IMHO, parts like that which are painted a special color are usually of much lessor quality than normal colored parts. I would honestly consider purchasing new and painting them myself.

Sure it's not Artec on the cd/rw drive? Is there a twist in the floppy cable? Fd needs to be after the twist, and the twist is far away from the mb.

Download Everest and it may tell you the manufacturer of the other drive. Things to check are proper jumpering of the drives and that the ide controller is set to DMA transfer. You can also remove the drive in device manager and reboot. It will load the drivers again.

The CDRW is Artec and is so marked. The DVD is a slightly different color, barely noticeable, and does not have a brand anywhere on it. I DL'd CDVDID (or something like that), but it did not recognize it. The floppy is advertised as a Mitsumi, but says Sony on both the bezel and the case. The floppy cable came with the DFI LANParty motherboard. It is round and has no twist that I noticed.

Drives are properly jumpered. I removed the CDRW from the setup to make sure there were no mistakes on that score. I also removed the device in device manager, without result. I have obtained an RMA and am pretty much ready to give up and send them back.

Thanks all. I will check on Everest. Not familiar with that one.
