..... but will using a dvd burner to play dvds all the time ruin the dvd burner?

and does using a CD burner drive to play cds all the time also ruin it at all?

i ask this because a few years ago i used to use my CD burner to play every cd i had. and it went out after some time. so i instead got extra dvd and cd drives that werent burners.

basically will playing dvd movies and dvd games on my dvd drive specific for burning ruin it?

because i got a new mobo and i had to just keep 2 optical drives now, my dvd burner and cd burner.

They are designed to play and burn. If they go bad shortly after using them for a while, it just means that it is poorly made. Buy a Sony or Plextor they are well made and will last a lot longer.

No, it wont. Reading would be less stress on the drive? But its pretty much the same thing, spin and laser the disc.

Your last drive failure was probably just a bad drive.

That's like asking "If I use my car to get places, will it ware out?"
Of course it will.
But that's just the way it is.
A good car (player/burner) will just last longer before it wares out.

It's been my experience that optical drives of any kind, from any manufacturer, are prone to failure, and have a relatively short lifespan.
