DVD and Blu-Ray trailers

Scouzer

Lifer
Does anybody have links to two identical clips... trailers or just a sample that would allow me to compare something true Blu-Ray quality and something regular DVD quality?

My mom wants to see them side by side. I know Apple offers HD trailer samples, but they aren't true DVD or true Blu-Ray quality.

If not... does anyone see any good DVD vs Blu-Ray comparison sites? I've found many for HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray, but no one cares about that!

The human is sensitive to very minor changes, so can I tell the difference, Yes, but its not a deal breaker and I won't stop watching DVDs or buying them if they're cheap. Its up to you to decide if the plot, sound etc is more important that seeing the texture on the trash can in the background.

That being said, I have a 46" Sammy 650 series and a PS3 and it looks nice. The PS3 upscales nicely.

75% of all statistics are made up....or is it 80%?

If video quality isn't important lets go back to black and white!

An upscaler can NOT make a DVD look any closer to blu-ray. All it can do is stop it from looking worse. It cannot create the detail that is lost when the video is encoded in 480 lines of resolution. Add to that better colors on Blu-ray and DVD is nowhere near the quality blu-ray offers.

And why do you bring up sound as if that is also not improved on blu-ray?

So if your saying that DVD is 95% as good as blu-ray, I will have to disagree.

Same here. Detail sometimes isn't a huge difference between the 2 formats, on either of my sets, probably because of viewing distance and the actual film in question, but color intensity always "pops" with blu-ray, and the same film on dvd will look faded or washed out by comparison.

My blu-ray player (a Samsung BD-P2550) has an excellent Reon upscaler and I only have a 720p set, but I disagree that DVD is 95% the image quality of BR - maybe more like 80-85. The lossless audio is, for me, even more noticeable than the visual improvement, but I still find the image quality difference significant. The Wall-E screenies in that AVS thread newnameman posted tell the story.

I look at it differently. I think in terms of "I already have the DVD, does the improvement justify me rebuying the movie?" And the answer would be on a case by case basis. There has been quite a few subpar BRDs and HD-DVDs that negate the point to high def.

Definitely. I am not much of a disc collector and probably would never rebuy even a DVD I really love on BD - it feels like a waste of money to me. Kung Fu Hustle is really tempting, though (it's one of my very favorite films and I'm sure it benefits from BD). In any case I am definitely not buying any more DVDs as long as BDs are on the market.

CGI already looks very good on DVD when done right.

BR looks vastly better then DVD imo. Just more detail, sharper, colours and the sound 😀

theres an 100% chance you are talking out of your ass.

bluray has 6 times the resolution of dvd.
if dvd looks good as bluray, its because your tv is a pos. you aren't going to magically upscale 6 times the detail into anything.

heres a bluray vs dvd screenshot comparison thread

I have 1200+dvds. There is no way in hell I can afford to replace the entire catalog. Only choice titles will get re-bought.

Stills are better than nothing! Great link, thanks! Hope there's some video out there too.

Take your mom to Best Buy or some other big box electronics store. My wife (who, for the most part, doesn't give a crap about HD) was blown away by a snippet of Wall-E. Chances are you won't need to have a side by side comparison.

And yes, only choice movies have been repurchased by me. Wall-E was the first. 🙂

I showed her the screen shots and she gave a resounding 'meh'. In some shots she even preferred the look of DVD! The Blu-Ray was so much brighter it looked almost over exposed.

She's 53 and I don't think she cares enough... so I think I'll just buy her a good upconverting DVD player.
