DVD accesses hard drive constantly

My LG DVD-ROM keeps on accessing the hard drive constantly even if there is no DVD in the drive. The constant accessing of the DVD-Rom locks up the computer after few minutes. I have even tried with a DVD movie in the drive which did not help. I have a Gigabyte KT400 - GA-7VA motherboard with WinME. This DVD-rom was working fine on a MSI 6380 motherboard. Please help. Thanks in advance.

How do you know that the dvd-rom drive is what is accessing the hard drive? That doesn't make too much sense.

Or do you mean that your computer keeps trying to access the dvd-rom drive which leads to the computer locking?

-1- Make sure you have all of your chipset drivers up to date.
-2- Disable auto insert notification.
