dvd 5.1 playback

Is there anyway to get 5.1 multichannel sound output from DVD movies without buying powerdvd or win dvd? The OEM bundled versions of these programs do NOT include full 5.1 multichannel output. only way to get 5.1 is to use spdif.
powerdvd says that it's the 2 channel version and it would be $40 to upgrade the audio. Seems a bit steep for something that they should have included anyway.

My system with the ATI 9700 pro fortunately comes with 5.1 output and a multimedia center program, but the GF4200TI does not. I went to nvidia's website and even they are making you pay extra for the NvDVD software.

any thoughts?

thanks.

also, can anyone play DVD's on linux yet?
